Synergy between Trailer/Cover/Poster

There are many ways how the synergy is maintained throughout the marketing process.

The example I am going to focus on is The Dark Knight Rises.  This film is one of this years biggest blockbusters.  One of the ways the synergy is maintained is through the Batman image in the center of the image, this uses the rule of thirds concept.  On each of these different types of media the Batman is the main focus of the media.  This is an example of synergy because this the Batman is in each different type of media.

Another way synergy is maintained is the same phrase on each type of media.  The phrase is " The Legend Ends",  on the poster it is on the bottom, on the front covers it is in the center and it is at the end of the trailer.  This synergy will make the viewers remember this phrase and therefore they will go and see the film because they remember the phrase.

Marketing Campaign of horror films

There are many ways how distributors market their films towards there target audience.

One example is through different forms of advertising.  Often the distributors will advertise there official trailer later on at night, they do this because a horror genre is meant to be scary and this links into the idea that night time is scary because it gets darker, thus the audience will remember the trailer because it will frighten them and will want to see it to find out the ending.  Another form of advertising is through billboards of motor ways, these billboards are very large and they have the official poster on it, and it will have a memorable image, which includes the release date and a memorable phrase which will stay in the viewers head and will make them want to see it.  The final form of advertising is through the internet.  Bigger studios will be able to put there trailer or poster on popular websites, such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.  With horror films the distributors will put there most memorable, often most scary, image on websites so that the viewers will remember that image and will be influences to go and see that film.

Another form of how distributors market their film is through popular actors.  Bigger Studios will often hire more popular actors/actresses because more audiences will know them and might like their acting and will want to see them more often.  For example, the horror film Zombie Land, used two popular young actors; Emma Stone and Jesse Eisenberg, teenage audiences will know this actors because they have starred in many with successful films.

The final form of marketing for for a horror genre is the release date of the film.  Most studios will release their films at certain months to help fit in with the genre of the film.  With horror genres the studios will release their film towards the winter because conventions of horror films are dark and cold and the in the winter it tends to be dark and cold, the studios do this to a more fear into the audience and this the viewers will get a better effect/trill from the film.

Film Poster Analysis

The Cabin In The Woods

This film poster is the poster of The Cabin In The Woods.  This poster uses many techniques to intrigue its audience to go and see the film.  The first technique is the background.  The background of this is a fading outline of the woods.  This fading outline can give many different ideas towards the storyline of the film.  It could mine that there is no woods and its all an illusion or could mean that the woods is dangerous, the viewers will have to find out by watching the film and seeing what this fading means.  The main image on this poster is the outline of the Cabin, it is black and filled with loads of text about comments towards the film.  The main piece of text is the headline, "The Cabin In The Woods" is name of the film and the creators have put this as the main headline because the audience will remember the name and therefore will spread the news to other plus thus more people will know about this film.  This is also done in a different font style then the others, it is more relevant to the theme of the film.  The Cabin is filled with positive comments about the film from different types of media (Newspapers, magazines etc), and the creators have done this to make it appealing towards the target audience because if a film has loads of positive comments from professional opinions then the audience most likely think it is a good film because it as positive comments from professional opinions.  The creators have put it inside the Cabin to make it more relevant to the film.  The phrase "You think you know the story.  Think again", has many functions which make it appeal towards its audience, one is that the word "you" is an example of synthetic personalisation, the word "you" makes the individual think the poster is based towards them but in reality it is based towards a a much wider audience.  Also this phrase makes the audience think, because it in includes "Think again", which will make the audience think, but they will want to know and therefore they will see the film.  The other text on this, is the producers and writer of the film, they have done this because they will be recognised and therefore people will go and see the film.  The final piece of text is the release date.  They released it on Friday the 13th which is the date were bad things are meant to happen, the producers have done this on purpose be make the audience more feared towards the film.

Film Poster analysis

The Dark Knight Rises

This film poster is the poster of The Dark Knight Rises.  This poster has many features which will make it noticeable, memorable and intriguing.  The first feature is the background of the poster, the background is an image of falling buildings into a pit a fire.  The creators have done this because the genre of this film is action and features such as fire and falling buildings are considered violent which links back to the action genre.  The falling building also symbolises danger which is linked to the action genre because danger is another form of action. The fire in the background is an action characteristic because fire is normally links to danger which links back to action.  The fire also links into the phrase "A Fire Will Rise", because it is a fire, this is cleverly done by the producers because they both have a fire characteristic to them.  The fire is also in the shape of the Batman symbol, this is an example of synergy between the film and the poster because the symbol is shown in both.  Also fans of the film the recognise this symbol instantly and instantly know that this poster is resembled to Batman.  The main image in this is The Batman.  This will be the first feature which people will notice as he is very recognisable and because they are using the rule of thirds concept by placing him in the centre of the poster.  Also the Batman is standing in front of the fire as a mark for his symbol and to show his heroism.  The text on this poster makes the poster more detailed and gives more information about the date and actors in the film.  The main piece of text is the headline, "The Dark Knight Rises" is name of the film and the creators have put this as the main headline because the audience will remember the name and therefore will spread the news to other plus thus more people will know about this film.  The phrase "A Fire Will Rise", links into the background as I have already explained but also leaves a question to the people who notice it, the question is, what is this fire?, it could be from buildings or it be a group of people, this will make the audience want to go and see it to fin out what this fire is.  behind this headline is again the Batman symbol which again uses synergy from the film to the poster but they have another style onto it to make it more memorable.  The other phrase "The Legend Ends JULY 20", this phrase boosts the credibility of the Batman because they are symbolising him as a legends and they have put "JULY 20" as the date the film is released.  This poster also lists the actors, sponsors and developers of the film.  Some people will recognise these actors and will want to see them and therefore will go and see the film.

Film Trailer Analysis

The Cabin In The Woods

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJUIgf7lsCY

This trailer is a trailer of a horror film The Cabin in the woods.  This trailer features a group of teenagers going into the woods to have party but there are strange creatures trying to get them and they are trying to get out alive.  This trailer has used many techniques to make it professional and appealing towards its audience.  The trailer starts with an Ident explaining about the approval of the trailer.  This is a must-have trailer convention because trailers need to approve before they are shown because it might not be appropriate for certain audience.  Then goes off into the story/plot.

The scenes in this trailer make the horror themed genre more realistic and scary.  However the start of the trailer seems that the teenagers are going to have a pleasant time in the cabin, but they are wrong when they encounter a strange elderly man who gives them a warning.  I feel that the trailer left me intrigued and wondering about the ending of the film, which is what the producers want from a trailer response to a horror.      The trailer starts the plot of the film after a minute of playing, before hand is the teenagers having a good time away from their parents.  The plot starts when a bird flies into an invisibly wall and bursts into flames.  It sets off the characters at the start of the film when they are on their journey to the woods and shows them all inside the van.  This trailer leaves about of unanswered questions such as what happens to the group. methods like these intrigue the audience and will make them want to go and see the film.  This will also intrigue a teenage audience because they might be able to relate to it, by the fact if they go camping and have a good time.  The story is also good because its set in an everyday setting but something unnatural happens.  This trailer doesn't have any big named actors in it but the actors they have chosen seem to fit in well with the setting of the film, they have chosen a group of normal looking teenagers and this can make other teenagers relate to these characters.  The cuts used in this trailer make it start off slow but as the trailer progresses the excitement builds as loads of jump cuts appear of different action scenes at a high speed, this makes the trailer more exciting because its gets faster and faster.  The trailer uses many different types of sounds to make the trailer more exciting and appealing towards its audience.   The main sound in this is dialogue.  It is mainly the dialogue of the characters, this makes the trailer more personalised with the characters and therefore might add more realism to the trailer.  There is also a high tempo sound track playing behind the dialogue which makes the trailer more exciting and builds the tension.  The final concept is the use of text shots within the trailer.  The text shots are used to create tension and give more insight into the dates and storyline of the film.  The text also leave unanswered questions, such as " Discover the secret behind the Cabin", will make the audience wonder what is the secret and therefore will want to watch it to find out the secret.

Film trailer analysis

The Dark Knight Rises

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GokKUqLcvD8

This trailer is for one of this year’s biggest blockbuster "The Dark Knight Rises".  This trailer has used many techniques to make it professional and appealing towards its audience.  The trailer starts with an Ident explaining about the approval of the trailer.  This is a must-have trailer convention because trailers need to approved before they are shown because it might not be appropriate for certain audience.  It then cuts to a cloudy background as it lists the sponsors and creators of the film.

The scenes in this trailer make it more dramatic, appealing and create an action feeling towards the trailer.  The trailer starts off slow and shows scenes of characters walking and a child singing.  The singing continues throughout most of the trailer.  It has starts off slow because the sound is also soft and slow.  The trailer starts off the plot of the trailer earlier on in the trailer, it does this by showing the main villain and the talk of protection.  It sets off the characters by showing them early on; it also shows what role they play by the scenes and dialogue they have chosen for them, for example: they show off the main villain by showing him triggering an explosion and the talk of death.  This trailer leaves a lot of unanswered questions which will intrigue their target audience, for example they leave the question, and will Batman die? by showing the main villain standing over him talking about his death.  It also draws their target audience in by setting up a good story line throughout the trailer, it doesn't give too much away but it gives them insight in order to intrigue them to watch it.  This trailer also uses big name actors and popular actors known by their target audience to intrigue their target audience to watch it.  Its uses Christian Bale, who is famously known as the Batman throughout the entire trailer, the audience will notice him and will inspire to watch it. They use sounds such as voice over’s, soundtrack and dialogue to make it more appealing.  For over half the trailer the main sound is the singing on a young boy, this adds a softer feeling to the trailer, but there are voice over’s of dialogue over lapping the main sound to give more insight and tension to the audience.  The final concept is the use of text shots on the trailer.  The text shots are used to create tension and give more insight into the dates and storyline of the film.  The text also leave unanswered questions, such as "The Legend Ends, this leaves a cliff hanger and the unanswered of how does it end?

Film Magazine Cover Analysis

Friday The 13th
This magzine cover has many features which make it appealing towards its target audience of the creators.  The first feature is the house style of the magazine.  The  first feature I am going to discuss is the house style which the creators have chosen to produce.  The developers have choose to make their masthead in a horror styled font.  This horror styled font links into the horror theme of the magazine because the drips on the letters are meant to symbolise blood, but the developers have made the colour yellow to draw away from the gour.  Also the background of the masthead, again, links into the horror themed genre of the magazine.  The background is a piece of wood with nails, this is often represented as a horror prop/decoration as it mostly symbiosis danger.  The subtitle "Blood, Guts, Gore & More", creates a horror feeling to the magazine, the words "Blood, Guts and Gore" are all symbols of the horror genre, the creators have done this to have a horror presence to the magazine.  The background of the is a forestry theme, the creators have done this to link in with the setting of the film (Friday the 13th), this creates synergy between the magazine and the film.  The background is also quite dark, whichs links into the horror genre of the magazine and film.

The images on the magazine complement the horror themed genre of the magazine.  The main image is the main topic of the magazine (Friday the 13th), and it features the main fear of the film.  It features a man, who looks mysterious because of this covered face.  The image uses the rule of thirds concept and places the image in the centre of the cover because the viewer will notice it instantly.  This man looks like the main fear of the film and the creators have chosen to put him on the cover because it fits in well with the concept of the horror magazine.  This man is also holding a machete which symbolises a violence/horror based scenario because a machete is a dangerous weapon.   The man is also entire covered which gives the illusion that anyone could be him, also the costume chosen makes will looks more violent which links into the horror based scenario.  The machete also has faces of people on it, this might confuse a viewer because it could mean the people he has killed or it could a reflection of light and showing the people he is about to kill, the creator has left this question so that the viewer will buy it and find out why there are faces on the machete.  Another image on this is the image of a young boy who looks disturbed or possessed.  This boy is a symbol of the film insidious, and people who have seen the trailer will recognise this because he is shown as the main villein in the trailer.  The boy looking possessed links that to the horror theme of the magazine because being possessed is considered to be a scary and horrific event.  The other image is the image of a man screaming as he is looking up at something.  This symbolises fear which links back to the horror theme of the magazine because screaming is considered a scary noise.  Also the fact that this is a grown man, and he is screaming means that the figure he is screaming at must be scary because men are normally considered to not scream at figures.  The final image is the image of a old man being frightened.  This image might be considered scary because the image of a man being frightened might frighten a viewer or put confusion to why they are frightened.  The three images are use the same style as the headline and look like they are nailed to wood to make it more like a horror based scenario.

The main text of the front cover is the name of the main topic of the magazine (Friday the 13th), the creators have done this so that the audience will know what the main topic of the magazine is.  The text is stands out from the others because it has a different font style and different font colour, this makes it stand out more.  They have made this text stand out more to make the main topic stand out more.  Also this text links to a horror based scenario because it is red and red is normally associated with blood.  The text under this is a separate piece of text about the director.  This might intrigue the audience because they might want to know more about the director of the main film.  The three separate pieces of text down the left hand side are have the uses towards the front cover.  They all consist of a title and text under them.  The title is in bold green to symbolise that it is a title and the text is a brief explanation of the title.  The creators have done this to make a brief explanation but so that the viewers will want to buy it and find out more about the topics.  The text on the bottom uses the same technique but it has on an explanation and also has a list of puffs which will make the audience want to buy it.

Film Magazine Cover Analysis

The Dark Knight Rises

This magazine cover has many features which makes it appealing towards the target audience of the creators.  The first feature I am going to discuss is the choice of house style which the developers have chosen to produce.  The developers have chosen to have a golden/dark text colour for their headline and masthead.  This choice of text has features which make it appealing.  The choice of colour matches/links with the main image (Batman) so make the text has more a resemblance towards the main topic/article of the magazine (The Dark Knight Rises).  This is also an example of colour synergy, they have used the same colours but they are different forms of magazine terminology, they have mixed together these two, to again make it more relatable towards the main topic.  Another house style feature is the background of the magazine.  The background of the magazine cover is the smashing of glass window.  This background symbolizes the genre and character of the film (action).  The background supports this genre because the smashing a glass window is violent which also comes into the category of action, which is the genre of the film., However the creators have made the background cover more of a ghostly colour, the creators have done this to create a more horror based scenario to intrigue the audience.

The images used on this front cover relate to the main topic of the magazine.  The main image on this front cover is Batman, which is also the main topic of the magazine.  As I have mentioned the colours of the main image match the colours of the main text, this creates colour synergy.  The creators have only put a single main image on this front cover because it is the main topic of the magazine; this image is also recognizable by its demographic which will intrigue them to buy the magazine.  The other image on this magazine is the Batman symbol.  Normally this symbol is black, as a dark symbol of the Batman, but the creators have, again, used colour synergy to change the Batman symbol into the golden dark colour.  The quotes used on this front cover relate to the subject of the magazine.  The people who quote on this front cover have a strong relation to the The Dark Knight Rises.  One of the people who quote is Christian Bale, Christian Bale (Who plays the Batman) has quoted "It's the end of an era, for me personally, and for Batman", the Batman film saga has been on for nearly a decade and this quote means that Christian Bale hasn't finished with Batman.  Also the "Christian Bale" text is bright yellow; this is to make him stand out as the lead actor, which will make him more noticeable.  The other quote used, is by Tim Burton (A famous American director).  The quote "Tim Burton writes exclusively for you", is an example synthetic personification, the creators have used the word "you" to make the reader more personalized with the magazine because the word "you" means towards a specific person.  Also film fans will recognize Tim Burton because he is a famous director; this will again intrigue the viewer because it has a famous director within the magazine.

The other headline "The Ultimate Batman Issue", suggests that this magazine has the best information, pictures etc about The Dark Knight Rises.  This headline is also at the top of the front cover, which will make it very noticeable to the viewers; this is also done because the text colour is white on a dark background.  The creators have also used a Batman sky symbol to highlight a piece of text.  Using the Batman sky symbol again creates a link from the cover to the film because this symbol is very popular and easily recognisable towards its audience.  The text within the sky symbol quotes "ESSENTIAL BATMAN GUIDE past, present and future rated revealed, reinvented...”  The section " ESSENTIAL BATMAN GUIDE" is in bold writing style and in all capital letters, the creators have done this as this is a pug and they want to try and persuade the audience to buy their magazine by making the "ESSENTIAL BATMAN GUIDE" more noticeable, also the word "Essential" will intrigue the audience because it means must have which implies that the audience must have it.  The other pug used on this magazine is the "exclusive" word above the headline, this will persuade the audience to buy it because their magazine has exclusive information and there target audience will want to see it.  Also this part has a yellow background on a dark background which will make it more noticeable.  The creators have also put in another celebrity icon on their front cover.  They have used Mcconaughey (A famous American Actor).  They have put "Confessions of Mcconaughey" as a heading to make it more noticeable, they have also used the word "Confessions" which will intrigue the audience which a famous actor has confessed things about him.  The text underneath the heading is "There is a beast underneath...” this will intrigue the audience because it is an unfinished sentence from the famous actor and the audience will find to find out the rest of the sentence by buying the magazine.  The creators have done this puff again but for a different meaning.  They have put as the heading " 'real' move gadgets" and the text is "buy your own light saber!”  This will intrigue the audience because film fans will want to own gadgets from their favourite films; they have used a "light saber" as the advertisement because it is popularly known from the stars wars film franchise.  The last section of text is add on information which might interest the audience, it will interest them because they mention upcoming films and information about them and film fans like to know information about upcoming films.

What I need to do

The research requirments I need to complete are:
- Detailed analysis of 2 trailers (one set and the other in the same genre as you select for your own product)
-Detailed analysis of 2 film magazine covers - How effective are they and why? (Choices as explained above)
Detailed analysis of at least 2 movie posters. Comment on techniques used - students should try to include a comparison of posters from the set movie.
-Explanation of the synergy between trailer/cover/poster - how this has been maintained throughout the marketing process.
